Epidemiology Flashcards
Gender more likely to have inattentive type
Female
Percentage of children with ADHD who have a comorbid anxiety disorder.
25-50% (March et al. 2000; Sciberras et al. 2014)
Percentage of children with ADHD who have persistence of impairing symptoms in adulthood.
Up to 65% (Faraone, Biederman, Mick 2006, Psychol Med)
Association of ADHD to obesity
Prevalence of obesity is 70% higher in adults with ADHD and 40% higher in children. Odds ratio is 1.47 using formal diagnosis of ADHD and measured height / weight. This does not establish causality. (Cortese et al 2016 Am J Psych)
Effect of gender on association of ADHD to obesity
Some studies suggested obesity is more likely in female patients with ADHD but meta-analysis showed no such link (Cortese et al Am J Psych 2016)
Comorbidity rate with ADHD
~70% of ADHD patients display at least one other comorbid disorder or specific neurological problem.
Risk of developing schizophrenia in children and adolescents with ADHD compared to controls.
Increased; 4.3 times more likely.
Persistence rate of ADHD at 10-year follow-up.
ADHD persists (syndromatic, symptomatic, or functional) in 78% of subjects at 10-year follow-up. (Biederman et al 2011)
Is ADHD a culture-bound syndrome?
ADHD has been identified in every country and culture in which it has been studied.
