epidemiologic methods Flashcards
chart abstraction
process of reviewing patient’s medical records
rates
Rates are measures that express the frequency of occurrence of a specific event or phenomenon within a population.
denominator
population at risk
incidence rate
rate of new cases appearing in a population during a period of time
new cases/ 100,000
prevalence
frequency in a population at any given time total cases/ 100,000
mortality rate
deaths that occur within a population over a specific period of time (deaths/100,000)
Epidemic Curve
Graphs when an outbreak is & the number of cases day by day
can help calculate the time of incubation and the infectious window
as cases go down, the transmission slows
Cohort Study
This study design involves following a group of people over time to determine if an exposure (e.g., smoking) is associated with an outcome (e.g., lung cancer)
Case Control
In this design, people with the outcome (cases) are compared to those without the outcome (controls) to determine the probability of previous exposure to a risk factor (e.g., smoking)
Intervention study
experiment where the effect of an intervention is tested. control vs treated
