वर्ण
Class or caste of men.
पुरूषार्थ
The aspiration and purpose of human life. This has four aspects: काम, sensual enjoyment; अर्थ, wealth; धर्म, virtue; and मोक्ष, liberation.
ब्राह्मणः
The class of learned priests or teachers.
क्षत्रियः
The class of courageous warriors, kings and statesmen.
वैश्यः
The class of merchants, producers and farmers.
शूद्रः
The class of servants and labourers.
आश्रम
A stage in life.
ब्रह्मचारिन्
The student stage of chastity, study and obedience.
गृहस्थः
The householder stage.
वानप्रस्थः
The forest dweller stage.
सन्न्यासिन्
The stage of complete renunciation as a wandering mendicant.
ध्यानम्
Meditation.
यज्ञः
Sacrifice. This can be a complicated ritual or dedicated action, such as the पञ्चमहायज्ञ ( The five great sacrifices ).
देवयज्ञ
Sacrifice to the divine through songs of praise.
ऋषियज्ञ
Sacrifices to the sages through recitation of their words and scriptures.
पितृयज्ञ
Sacrifice to our fathers, ancestors, nation and tradition.
मनुष्ययज्ञ
Sacrifice for mankind.
भूतयज्ञ
Sacrifice to lower being through care of the environment.
तपस्
Disciplined action that purifies and enhances energy.
अहिंसा
Harmlessness of thought, speech and action.
सत्यम्
Unfailing truthfulness in speech.
अस्तेयम्
Abstention from theft.
शौचम्
Cleanliness.
अभयम्
Fearlessness.
दानम्
Generosity.
दमः
Control of mind, speech, senses and body.
स्वाध्यायः
Regular study of the scriptures.
अक्रोधः
Absence of anger.
शान्तिः
Peace.
दया
Compassion.
