Ephitelial Tissue Flashcards
Epithelial Tissue Characteristics
Characteristics:
Closely packed cells with minimal extracellular material
forms continuous sheets
has polarity with apical and basal surface
regenerative
Epithelial Tissue Function
Cover body surfaces, line body cavities, and form glands
function in protection, absorption, and filtration
Epithelial Tissue Embryonic Origin
derived from ectoderm and endoderm; see types of epithelial tissue derive from mesoderm
Four types of Epithelial Tissue
Simple squamous epithelium
stratified squamous epithelium
simple columnar epithelium
transitional epithelium
Simple Squamous Epithelium
Found in lining of blood vessels and alveoli in lungs
Functions in diffusion and filtration
Stratified squamous epithelium
found in skin, mouth, and esophagus
provides protection against abrasion
simple columnar epithelium
found in the lining of the digestive tract
functions in absorption and secretion
transitional epithelium
found in the urinary bladder
allows stretching to accommodate fluid
