Ephialtes Flashcards
What did Ephialtes do regarding the Areopagus
As detailed by ARISTOTLE, Ephialtes removed many members of the Areopagus as it was a lot like the House of Lords (membership was for life and was confined to ex archons)
Went after Cimon and his pro Spartan foreign policy, and was ostracised
Removed political powers of the Areopagus, allowed the court to keep their legal powers of homicide etc
Ensured that the Ekklesia was the sovereign institution in Athens
How did Ephialtes empower the Heliaea ? Remember Aristotle is credited with documenting his reforms!!!
Transferred certain judicial powers from Areopagus to heliaea
Removed power from aristocrats who had dominated the heliaea for a long time
Made sure they legal officials were subject to public scrutiny
