Ephedrine Flashcards
What is the pharmacologic category/class of ephedrine?
- synthetic non-catecholamine sympathomimetic
- direct & indirect acting alpha/beta agonist
What is the mechanism of action of ephedrine?
- Direct: stimulation of both alpha and beta receptors
- Indirect: causes release of endogenous norepinephrine
Similar effects as epi, but less potent and longer lasting
What is the adult bolus dose range of ephedrine for hypotension during anesthesia?
- 5-10 mg, repeat as needed for max cumulative dose of 50 mg
Some sources say single dose range is up to 25 mg
What is the pediatric bolus dose range of ephedrine for hypotension during anesthesia?
- 0.1-0.3 mg/kg, repeat as needed for max cumulative dose of 50 mg
What is the onset of action for ephedrine?
What is the duration of action for ephedrine?
- 15-90 minutes
Epi is only ~5 minutes
What organ(s) are responsible for ephedrine’s clearance (metabolism/elimination)?
- Metabolism: Liver (P450)
- Elimination: Kidneys
True or false:
Ephedrine is the preferred sympathomimetic for administration to parturients experiencing hypotension related to anesthesia
- False - it is more likely to cause fetal acidosis than phenylephrine
