What is the unconscious bias?
Subconscious social stereotypes that we have about certain people that we are unaware about.
Unconscious (or implicit) bias is a term that describes the associations we hold, outside our conscious awareness and control.
Unconscious bias affects everyone. Unconscious bias is triggered by our brain automatically making quick judgments and assessments.
What negative impact can acting with your unconscious bias have?
Unconscious bias can lead to bullying, harassment, discrimination, people feeling excluded, being less productive and unengaged.
It impacts upon recruitment decisions, employee development, impairs diversity and negatively affects staff retention rates.
When unconscious bias is not addressed, it affects the morale and the overall experience of the workers.
Why is it important to address your unconscious biases?
To make sure everyone is treated fairly and justly.
By improving one’s awareness and understanding of unconscious bias, individuals can begin to change how they think about and engage with diversity issues.
Implicit bias matters because everyone possesses these unconscious associations, and implicit bias affects our decisions, behaviors, and interactions with others. Although implicit biases can be positive or negative, both can have harmful effects when they influence our decision-making.
