EOY yr 9 Flashcards
What are the two types of crust on the earth?
Oceanic (thinner and denser) and continental (thicker and less dense) lithosphere
What is the point where 2 plates meet?
Plate boundary
Constructive plate boundary?
Plates move apart because of convection currents. Magma rises, cools and solidifies to form new land or shield volcanoes (thin runny lava)
Destructive plate boundary?
The two plates are moving towards each other and the oceanic plate subducts beneath the continental plate and melts. The now magma rises and seeps thru the cracks in the lithosphere and due to viscous (think) lava a composite volcano is formed
Earthquakes at conservative plate boundaries?
The plates are moving in the same direction but at different speeds. So the friction and pressure builds up and suddenly releases, releasing seismic waves causing a shaking ground (earthquake)
Draw a diagram for a collision plate boundary volcano
Two plates moving towards each other and causing a pathway for magma to flow through
2 types of volcano? 3 features for each one
Shield volcano:
-formed at constructive plate boundaries and hotspots. -
They are wide, flat
-layers of of lava w gently sloping sides,
-frequent but gentle eruptions
Composite volcano :
-formed at destructive plate boundaries
-steep sided and narrow base
-Layers of ash and lava
-secondary vents
-infrequent eruptions
-explosive reactions
Draw a diagram of shield and composite volcanoes
Look in book
Describe one prediction method with reducing risks with volcanic eruptions
TILTMETERS- detects the swelling of the volcano. If the volcano becomes steeper it shows magma is rising and people are warned to evecuate
Describe one protection method with reducing risks with volcanic eruptions
EVACUATION: people leave an arena straight after or before a volcanic eruption for the highest rate of survival
Describe one preparation method with reducing risks with volcanic eruptions
FIRST AID KIT - this allows people to have access to medical supplies as they are evacuating
Impacts of the turkey - Syria earthquake
26 million people needed assistance across both countries - medical facilities under stress
Death toll in turkey was 41,000- emotional toll on population
1 million in turkey are living in tents and temporary shelters- economy (workforce)
34.2 billion US dollars for repair-
One of turkeys largest seaports was badly damaged- economy less trading and shipping. Less resources
