EOY Topic 1 Flashcards
Energy
The ability to do work
What is energy measure in?
Joules
8 energy stores
Chemical, kinetic, GPE, elastic, thermal, nuclear, electrical, magnetic
4 energy transfers
Mechanical, radiation, heating, electricaly
Law of conservation of energy
Energy can’t be created or destroyed, only transferred between stores
GPE equation
KE equation
Useful energy
Energy transferred to the store you want it to go to
Wasted energy
Dissipated to the surroundings
Efficiency equation
Efficiency
How much as a percentage of the energy or power transferred goes to the useful energy
Power equation
Power
Rate of transfer of energy
Energy stores for kettle boiling
Electrical decreases, thermal increases, wasted energy in sound and heat
Renewables
Non renewables
Infinite, never run out
Finite, will run out one day
Advantages and disadvantages of solar energy
Advantages - efficient, renewable, no running cost, no greenhouse gases.
Disadvantages - weather dependant, high installation cost, low energy output
Advantages and disadvantages of fossil fuels
Advantages - reliable, lot of energy per kg of fuel, quick start time, cheap
Disadvantages - non-renewable, emits greenhouse gases (CO2)
Advantages and disadvantages of nuclear power
Advantages- huge energy output, reliable, green
Disadvantages - expensive to set up, long start up time, radioactive waste needs to be dealt with
