What is worship?
Worship, in the religious sense, is an act of expression or devotion and adoration towards a deity or divine-like figure
What is formal worship?
Usually follows a strict set of rules, practices and rituals. This may include certain prayers read out and specific people leading the worship at a certain place
What is informal worship?
Informal or Private worship is less strict. This will be conducted in a place of worship or a casual setting. It will have less structure and rules.

How do Jewish people worship?
- Jews are required to worship/pray 3 times a day which can be anywhere with anyone
- On Holy Days and the Sabbath, extra prayers must be said
- The daily prayers are made by readings from the Jewish Scriptures
How do Christians worship?
- Worship for Christians is mainly connected with Sunday and going to Church
- They gather with other Christians and have a service
- Roman Catholics will celebrate Mass and Pentecost
How do Muslims worship?
- Islam is divided into 2 groups: Sumi Muslims and Shia Muslims
- All Muslims believe in one God - Allah
- Some Muslims must pray (salah) five times a day. These prayers are made up of bodily movements
How do Hindus worship?
- Most Hindus worship one of the main gods: Brahma, Vishnu & Shiva
- The basic form of Hindu worship is ‘puja’. It can be done at home or in a mandir
How do Sikhs worship?
- Sikhs do not have images of God in the gurdwara as God has no form. Sikhs worship God
- They have images of Guru Nanak but don’t worship him
- Sikhs should pray at home 3 times a day. There is no set time for public worship but Sikhs usually go to the gurdwara on a Sunday
How do Buddhists worship?
- Worship involves religious acts of praise directed towards a god or gods
- Buddhist worship is called puja and can take place at home or in a temple or monastery

What is the definition of fasting
Fasting is the practice of refraining from eating and drinking for a specific amount of time.
What is sawm?
Sawm is observed during Ramadan. Most Muslims must fast during Ramadan. Muslims are prohibited from sexual activity, eating, drinking, or smoking during this time. Muslims are permitted to break their fast after sunset. Muslims celebrate Eid ul-Fitr, a celebrationat the end of Ramadan, by dressing up and going to the mosque for a specialprayer.
What is Yom Kippur?
Yom Kippur is the Jewish Day of Atonement and is the most important holiday in the Jewish calendar. Yom Kippur is a day for repentance and reflection on the previous year. The majority of Jews skip work/school on this day. They don’t eat/drink during Yom Kippur. Jews decide to fast to atone for the sins they have done throughout the previous year.
