EOY - GEO - Y8 🪨 Flashcards
Name 3 sources of evidence of climate change.
Tree rings, Ice cores, Historical sources.
How do tree rings work?
Each ring shows a year of growth, the size of them show conditions during the year.
How do ice cores work?
Scientists analyse the bubbles in each layer of the ice showing them the temperatures of each year.
How do historical sources work?
Things like old photos, drawings and diaries can show us some evidence of climate change but it is not too accurate.
What are 4 peices of evidence that our climate is changing?
Vanishing islands, Planet warming up, Death of species, Extreme weather.
What is the natural greenhouse effect?
- Energy from the sun warms the earth.
- Some escapes back into space.
- Some is held by greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere.
What is the enhanced greenhouse effect?
The enhanced greenhouse effect is when extra greenhouse gases in the atmosphere trap too much of the Sun’s energy.
How are humans changing the carbon cycle?
Doing various things like burning fossil fules, mining, food and mineral production and deforistation.
Which countries are most to blame for Climate Change?
1) China
2)USA
3)India
4)Russia
Name some indutries most respinsible for climate change:
1)Fossil fuels
2)Transportation
3)Agriculture
4)Manufacturing/Construction
How will the Maldives be affected by climate change?
Scientist predict that in 50-100 years the Maldives will be completely submerged because of rising sea levels. This will cause: a loss of tourism, disrupt the fishing industry, loss of beachesand less fresh water available.
Why is London an unsustainable city?
London’s ecological footprint is 125 times it’s geographical area! This is the impact a person/community/area has on the environment.
What is BedZed?
Bedzed is the biggest eco community in the UK, it promotes everything ecological and energy conservation.
Give 3 examples of renewable energy:
Hydroeletric power (HEP), Solar energy and Wind energy.
How much was the Swansea Bay tidal lagoon project expected to cost?
£1.3 billion GBP.
What is a cold environment?
An area that is always covered by ice: it may have glaciers, ice sheets and frozen rock or soil.
Where are cold environments found around the world?
Cold environments are usually found in high latutudes and altitudes. There is a cold environment in every continent.
What is the zone of accumilation?
Where there are inputs into the glacial budget.
What is the zone of ablation?
When there are outputs from the glacial budget.
What might happen in the zone of ablation?
Melting due to rising temperatures.
What is the glacial budget?
A system where there is inputs, processes and outputs.
What is plucking?
When meltwater freezes into a rock and as the glacier moves downhill, rock is taken from the back wall.
What is abrasion?
Abrasion is when rocks have frozen to the base and the back of the glacier scrapes bedrock.
What is freeze-thaw?
Freeze thaw is the process when water seeps into cracks, expands and eventually breakes the rock apart.
Describe a shape of a corrie?
An armchair shape with a steep back wall and a tarn.
Explain how a corrie is formed:
A corrie is formed by snow and ice building up and then condencing and creating a glacier. This deepens and creates a hollow. As it builds up it erodes more and more.
How is a U-shaped valley formed?
As a glacier moves through a valley it erodes it’s surroundings. This creates steep sides and a wide valley floor.
How do u-shaped valleys compare to v-shaped valleys?
V-shaped valleys are formed by rocks and sedement in rivers eroding a valley whereas a u-shaped valley is formed by a glacier moving through an already-existing valley.
Why is ice melting and why will it affect us?
As humans, we are always releasing harmful gasses that contribute to rising temperature levels. This will cause sea levels to rise up to 60 meters.
What is the evidence that the global climate is changing?
