Enzymes - Biology Flashcards
What is the definition of amino acids?
Building blocks which make up a protein.
What are enzymes?
A protein which catalyses or speeds up a chemical reaction.
What is the active site?
The part of the enzyme to which a specific substrate binds too
What is a substrate
A substance on which enzymes act on.
What is a product?
A substance formed in a chemical reaction!
What does synthesis mean?
A build-up reaction, two or more substances join to form one product!
What is the process of degradation?
A break-down reaction, one substance breaks up to smaller substances!
What is specificity?
Enzyme will only act upon ONE specific substrate.
What is the optimum?
The conditions in which an enzyme is at its most active ( temperature! Ph)
What does it mean to be denatured?
The change in the shape of the active site of an enzyme resulting in the substrate not being able to bind and the reaction not taking place!
State the function of an enzyme?
They are biological catalysts and are made by all living cells. Enzymes speed up chemical reactions and are unchanged in the process!
State the function of the active site?
The shape of the active site of an enzyme molecule is complementary to its specific substrate(s).
What does HPCOW stand for and what kind of reaction is it?
Hydrogen peroxide - catalase - oxygen and water. Degradation reaction!
