Enzymes - biological catylists Flashcards

1
Q

lock and key theory

A

the lock and key throury is when a certain substrate “key” fits into a certin enzyme “lock”and only that ceertain “lock” can break the nutrient into smaller molecules

Q

temperature

A

the optimal tmeperature of the enzyme is 40 c
between 0 - 40 - as the enzyme temperature increases so does the reaction time
after 40 c the enzyme loses its shape which is called denturing and no longer works with the lock and key theory

Q

pH

A

The pH inside a majority of enzymes is natural ( 7)

  • in the stomach, the enzyme is more acidic ( o ) to break down the bacteria.
  • in the beginning of the intestines, the enzymes are very alkaline to bring the nutrients back to 7
  • like with the optimal temperature the enzymes have an optimal pH and if they aren’t in their optimal pH they denature and the Lock and Key theory doesn’t work anymore
