Enzymes and Digestion Flashcards
What do digestive enzymes do
Break down big molecules like starch proteins and fats so they can be absorbed into the blood
What are examples of digestive enzymes
carbohydrase (for carbohydrates), protease (for protein), lipase (for fat)
What does bile do
Bile neutralises the stomach acid and emulsifies fats
Where are enzymes produced
In specialised cells in glands and in the gut lining
What do salivary glands do
produce amylase enzyme in saliva
What does the liver do
produces bile
What does the gall bladder do
store bile before it is released into the small intestine
What does the large intestine do
absorbs excess water from food
What does the rectum do
where the faeces are stored
What does the small intestine do
produces protease, amylase and lipase enzymes, and is where digested food is absorbed into the blood
What does the pancreas do
Produces protease, amylase and lipase enzymes and releases them into the small intestine
What does the stomach do
Pummels food with muscular walls, produces the protease enzyme pepsin and produces hydrochloric acid
