Enzymes Flashcards
What are enzymes made of?
Proteins
What are there functions?
They function as biological catalysts which speeds up a chemical reaction without the reaction being changed
What is the process called when large substances are broken down into smaller molecules
Digestion
What is the process called when small substances are joined together to create large substances
Synthesis/ Assimilation
Large molecules are called?
Monomers
Small molecules are called?
Polymers
What do proteins break down into?
Amino acids
What do Starch break down into?
Glucose
What do lipids break down into?
Fatty acids and glycerol
What enzymes break down protein?
They are broken down by protease
What enzyme breaks down lipids?
They are broken down by lipase
What enzyme breaks down starch?
Its broken down by amylase
What is a substrate?
A substance that is broken down by enzymes
What is a active site?
An area where substrates can fit into to the enzymes, however the active site has a specific shape so only certain ones fit into it.
What is a denatured enzyme and what can cause it to become denatured?
When an enzyme is deformed and cannot properly do its job. High temperatures and low or high pH levels cause it to become denatured.
