Enzymes Flashcards
What does protease break down and what is it broken down into
It breaks down Proteins and it gets broken down into amino acids
What does amylase break down and what does it get broken down into
It breaks down starch into sugars
What does lipase break down and what’s it broken down into
It breaks down lipids (fats) these are broken down into glycerol and fatty acids
Where can amylase be found in the body?
Mouth
Small intestine
Pancreas (only produces)
Where in the body can lipase be found?
Pancreas (only produces)
Small intestine
Where in the body is protease found?
It’s found in the pancreas, small intestine and stomach
What neutralises stomach acid?
Bile
Where is bile produced?
In the liver
Why is amylase not found in the stomach
The stomach is too acidic for amylase enzymes to work
What does the pancreas produce and where does the product go?
It produces protease, amylase and lipase and is then released into the small intestine
What happens in the large intestine
Excess water is absorbed from the food
What else does bile do?
Emulsifies fats
What are enzymes used for
To catalyse the breakdown of food
What does the enzyme carbohydrase do?
Turns starch syrup into sugar syrup
What does isomerase do?
It turns glucose syrup into fructose syrup
Why do we convert glucose syrup into fructose syrup
Because fructose is much sweeter meaning less of it is used in food making it suitable for slimming products
Biological detergents contain which enzymes?
Protease and lipase
What temperature do biological detergents work best at?
Low temperatures such as 30 degrees Celsius
