Enzymes Flashcards
What r enzymes
Catalysts produced by living things
What’s a catalyst
A Substance which increases the speed of a reaction without being changed or used up in the reaction
Ezymes are
Biological catalysts
What do enzymes reduce the need for
High temperatures
Enzymes speed up
Useful chemical reactions in the body
What are enzymes
Large proteins made up of chains of amino acids these chains fold into unique shapes
Enzymes have special shapes
So they can catalyse reactions
Chemical reactions involve
Splitting apart or joining together
What do enzymes have
A active sight w a unique shape that’s fits in to the substance involved in a reaction
How many factions do enzymes usually catalyse
1
For the enzyme to work
The substrate has to fit into the active sight
If the substrate doesn’t fit
The reaction won’t be catalysed
Enzymes need the right
Ph and temperature
Induced fit
Active site changes shape a little bit as the substrate binds to it to get a tighter fit
