enzymes Flashcards
anabolic reactions ___ energy and ___ larger molecules from smaller
need, make
catabolic reactions ___ energy and ___ ___ large molecules into smaller
release, break down
allosteric inhibition
substrates bonds to allosteric site and stabilizes the enzyme shape so that the active sites are closed
how are enzymes regulated
modifying the active site of the enzyme and switching genes that code for enzymes on or off
How does a change in the enzyme’s environment affect the activity of the enzyme?
If the temperature or pH of the environment is changed causes enzyme to change shape or denature
Competitive inhibition
reduce enzyme activity by blocking substrates from bonding to an active site
noncompetitive inhibition
bind to an area other than the active site which changes the shape of the active site and preventing substrates from binding
How is competitive inhibition different from allosteric inhibition?
allosteric binds to the allosteric site and stabalizes the enzyme so the active site closes whereas competitive reduces enzyme activity by blocking the active site
