Enzymes Flashcards
1
Q
How do competitive inhibitors work?
A
Competitive inhibitors compete with the substrate for the active site. When it binds to the enzyme, it occupies the active site without causing a reaction.
2
Q
What do non competitive inhibitors do?
A
Do not bind to the active site, can bind to a site that is not the active site. Change the shape of the active site - so enzyme can no longer bind to substrate as the shapes are no longer complementary
3
Q
How can you reduce inhibitation by competitive inhibitors?
A
Increasing substrate concentration - greater substrate conc will outcompete the inhibitor for the active site
