Enzymes Flashcards
What do enzymes speed up?
They speed up chemical reactions
What is the groove on the enzyme surface?
Active site
What does the active site attached to?
It attaches to the substrate
Why must enzymes be specific?
So the substrate can fit perfectly into the active site
What are proteins broken down by?
Enzymes called proteases
What happens to the activity of the enzyme when the temperature increases?
The activity of the enzyme increases (the reaction gets faster)
As the temperature increases, what happens to the enzymes and substrate?
They move faster so there are more collisions per second between the substrate and active site
What happens to the enzyme at high temperatures?
The enzyme molecule vibrates and the shape of the actor site changes
What is it called when the substrate no longer fits in the active site?
Denatured
Can the enzyme catalyse if the active site is two acidic or two alkaline?
No
