Enzymes Flashcards
What are biological catalysts
Enzymes
What are the five properties of an enzyme
Enzymes are found and produced in every living cell, enzymes are made of proteine, enzymes speed up chemical reactions, they remain unchanged in chemical reactions and enzymes are specific to their substrate
What does it mean when we say that an enzyme is specific
They can only bind to one substance which we call a substrate
What is the active site
It is were the substrate and enzyme will bind
What are the two types of reactions controlled by enzymes what are they
Degradation (break down) and synthesis (build up)
Where are enzymes found
In living cells
What is the purpose of an enzyme
To speed up chemical reactions
What are two factors that affect ab enzyme
PH and temperature
When do enzymes work best
In their optimum conditions
What is denaturation
At high temperatures the structure of enzymes are changed and the active site is no longer complimentary to its substrate, this means that the enzyme cannot function. This effect cannot be reversed
