enzymes Flashcards
define the term product
the product is what is formed when the enzyme and subsrtate react
define the term substrate
substrate is the substance the enzyme reacts with
describe the shape of an enzyme
its a 3-d shape with a region called the active site where it changes shape to fit a substrate
state the biomoelcule an enzyme is made from
protein
define catalyst
speeds up chemical reaction without being used up in said reaction
describe the role of an enzyme
enzymes control chemical reactions
describe the effects of temperature on enzymes activity
too low or too high temperature can cause an enzyme to be denatured, optimum temp in humans is 37 degrees and in plants its 20-30 degrees
describe the effects of ph on enzyme activity
too low or too high ph can casue the enzyme to be denatured, optimum ph is 7 but in pepsin the stomcah acid its 2
define the term optimum activity
optimum activity is the conditions under which enzymes work the best
defien the term denatured enzyme
an enzyme that has lost its shape and can cause the substrate to not fit in the active site menaing the enzyme can no longer function
define the term immoblized enzyme
immoblized enzymes are trapped in a gel or attatched to eachother
describe the formation of immoblized enzymes
cross linking, ceramic beads, entrapped in a gel
state the advantages of immoblized enxmes
can be reused so it cuts cost
catabolic reacti0ons
convert smaller molecules into larger molecules
anabolic reactions
convert smaller molecules into larger molecules
