Enzymes Flashcards
What is a catalyst?
A substance that speeds up a chemical reaction without being used up.
What is an enzyme?
A biological catalyst.
What is a substrate?
Something that an enzyme reacts upon.
What is a product?
Something left after the reaction.
Why do enzymes only work with a particular substrate?
They are specific to a particular substrate.
Name 5 enzymes
Amylase, Catalase, Lipase, Phosphorylase and Pepsin.
How do we remember the word equation for Amalase?
SAM
Starch -> Amylase -> Maltose
How do we remember the word equation for Catalase?
HPCOW
Hydrogen Peroxide -> Catalase -> Oxygen + Water
How do we remember the word equation for Pepsin?
PPAA
Protein -> Pepsin -> Amino Acids
How do we remember the word equation for Phosphorylase?
G1PPS
Glucose 1 Phosphate -> Phosphorylase -> Starch
How do we remember the word equation for Lipase?
FLAG
Fats -> Lipase -> Fatty Acids + Glycerol
What is the name of when a substrate and an enzyme are joined?
Enzyme Substrate Complex
What happens to enzymes at high temperatures?
They become denatured
What are the two enzyme reactions
Synthesising and degrading
What are enzymes made of?
Proteins
