Enzymes Flashcards
1
Q
what are enzymes?
A
- biological catalyst
- large proteins
2
Q
what are catalysts?
A
substances that increase the speed of a reaction without being changed or used up
3
Q
what is the active site?
A
they have a unique shape that is specific to substrate
4
Q
when does denaturation happen?
A
when there are high temperatures or extreme pH
5
Q
how do enzymes work?
A
- enzymes and substrates randomly move in solutions
- when an enzyme and its complementary substrate randomly collide, a reaction occurs
- a product forms and it is released
6
Q
Optimum temperature
A
- enzymes work faster at their optimum temperature
- in the human body, optimum temperature is 37 degrees
7
Q
how do high temperatures affect enzymes?
A
high temperatures will break the bonds that holds enzymes and active site will lose its shape
- the enzyme has denatured
8
Q
pH
A
the optimum pH for most human enzymes is pH 7
