Enzyme Kinetics Flashcards
What is the definition of a half life?
the time taken for the concentration of a reactant to reach half of its original value.
Explain competitive inhibition.
when a molecule or an ion can fit into the active site on an enzyme but remains there unreacted
What is a cofactor?
a molecule or an ion needed for an enzymes full catalytic activity to be available.
What is the Michaelis Constant?
the concentration of a substrate that give 50% of the maximum rate.
What is induced fit?
When either the enzyme, the substrate, or both change shape when they bind.
What is a first order reaction?
the reaction rate is directly proportional to the concentration of reactants
e.g. as the concentration increases, the rate of reaction increases.
What is a zero order reaction?
the reaction rate is constant, regardless of the concentration of reactants present.
