Enzyme inhibitors Flashcards
what are competitive inhibitors?
a molecule that has a similar shape to the substrate of the enzyme and can fit into the active site
how do competitive inhibitors affect enzymes?
they block the substrate entering the active site and the enzyme can’t carry out its function and the rate of reaction is reduced
what are non-competitive inhibitors?
they bind to enzymes at a location - allosteric site which causes the tertiary structure to change shape
how do non-competitive inhibitors affect enzymes?
they change the tertiary structure so that the active site is no longer complementary to the substrate so a enzyme-substrate complex can’t be formed
what is end product inhibition?
when the product of the reaction acts as an inhibitor to the enzyme that produces it
how do end product inhibition affect enzymes?
excess products aren’t made and resources aren’t wasted
