enzyme inhibitors Flashcards
explain a competitive inhibitor
-molecules of similar shape to a substrate which competes with substrate blocking the active site so no ESC can be formed
-most are reversible
-reduce its effect by increasing the substrate concentration
-maximum rate of reaction can be reached
-doesn’t affect tertiary structure
draw a graph for a competitive inhibitor
explain a non-competitive inhibitor
-molecule which binds to enzymes allosteric site= active site changes shape = substrate can’t fit= reduces rate of reaction
-affects tertiary structure of enzyme
-most are irreversible
-increasing substrate concentration has no effect
-maximum rate can’t be reached
draw a graph for a non-competitive inhibitor
explain end product inhibition and what the advantage of it is to the cell
-the end product of a metabolic pathway (sequence of enzyme controlled reactions) inhibits the first enzyme in the pathway by binding to its allosteric site
-prevents too many wasteful products to be made in cell
what is negative feedback
-mechanism that reverses the change and brings conditions back to normal
