Enzyme Inhibition Flashcards
What are competitive inhibitors?
bind to the active site of the enzyme
What are non-competitive inhibitors?
bind to the enzyme at a position other than the active site.
Why do competitive inhibitors have the same shape as a substrate?
Competitive inhibitors have a similar molecular shape to allow them to compete against substrates to occupy the active sites in the same way.
Examples of competitive inhibitors:
- Inhibition of enzyme transpeptidases by penicillin.
Where do non-competitive inhibitors attach themselves to on the enzyme?
They attach to a binding site that is not the active site.
What do non-competitive inhibitors do?
They alter the shape of the enzyme and hence its active site, so that substrates can no longer occupy it and the enzyme can no longer function.
