Enzyme Classes Flashcards
General classes/names of enzymes and their function(s)
oxidoreductase
redox reactions
often have cofactor that acts as an electron carrier (NAD+ or NADP+)
dehydrogenase
oxidoreductase (redox reactions)
reductase
oxidoreductase (redox reaction)
-oxidase
oxidoreductase, where oxygen is the final electron acceptor
transferase
movement of functional group
kinase
form of transferase
moves phosphate from atp (usually) to molecule
hydrolase
breaking compound by adding water
phosphatase
form of a hydrolase (breaks with water)
cleaves phosphate from molecule
peptidase
hydrolase (breaks with water)
nuclease
hydrolase (breaks with water)
lipase
hydrolase (breaks with water)
lyase
cleave single molecule into two products WITHOUT water
can also catalyze the reverse reaction - can synthesize too
synthase
also generally a lyase (makes or breaks bonds in a molecule without water or redox)
usually synthesis of smaller molecules
isomerase
rearrangement of bonds IN THE SAME MOLECULE
can be an oxidoreductase, transferase, or lyase, depending on mechanism of the enzyme
**reactions between stereoisomers and constitutional isomers
ligase
addition or synthesis reactions - large, similar molecules usually
often need ATP
**nucleic acid synthesis
