Enymes Flashcards
What is the function of the mouth?
The function of the mouth is to break food into small particles and mix it with saliva.
How can enzymes be affected by changes in PH?
Enzymes get denatured
How the functioning of enzymes can be affected by changes in active site caused by changes in temperature?
A higher temperature makes for higher rates of reaction.
the role of enzymes as biological catalysts in metabolic reactions are?
They speed up the rate of biological reactions in the body, without getting used up or altered in the process.
Describe the structure of a villus and explain how this helps absorption of the products of digestion in the small intestine.
The villi in the small intestine provides a large surface area with an extensive network of blood capillaries.
Where is bile produced?
In the liver
Where is bile stored?
Bile is stored in the gall bladder.
What is the role of bile in neutralising stomach acid and emulsifying lipids?
It neutralises. The acid providing the alkaline conditions needed in the small intestine.
What is the roll of digestive enzymes?
Breaking down the food you eat.
What is starch and glycogen broken down into?
Starch and glycogen are broken down into glucose by amylase and maltase.
how and why food is moved through the gut by peristalsis?
Food is moved through the digestive system by a process called peristalsis. There are muscle like contractions which push the food through the alimentary canal.
