Environments - Chapter 11 Flashcards
Define enivronment
An environment is the sum of all the earth, air, water, and any habitats and all factors including temperature, wind speed etc.
Define habitat
A habitat is the general location in an environment where an organism currently is situated/resides and all the factors that effects this organism.
What are the two different types of factors effecting an environment?
Biotic factors (living factors) : -small plants, mammals, increase in predators, decrease in food etc. Abiotic factors (non-living factors) : - temperature, wind speed, presence of water etc.
Describe one adaptation in relation to environmental factors.
Presence of water: Fish have developed gills to be able to survive in bodies of water, as they can process the gaseous oxygen (O[g]) in the water when most mammals cannot.
What is a structural adaptation?
Any change to the general makeup of the organism eg. feathers, claws
What is a functional adaptation?
Any function that uses the structural adaptation to do things.
e.g. can turn sound into chemical energy (ears)
What is a behavioural adaptation?
Any change in the general behaviour of an organism to gain an advantage.
e.g. nocturnal activities
