Environmental Science Flashcards
•thin layer of gases that hover above our
planet’s surface.
Atmosphere
deadly gases such as
Methane and Ammonia
is made of three
oxygen atoms bonded together. It blocks out
ultraviolet radiation from the sun)
Ozone
The formation of the ozone layer allowed
MICRO-ORGANISMS
were some of the early organisms
that used photosynthesis to convert CO2
into Oxygen
Stromatolites
•It is the most important layer for living things
because it contains over 80% of all the air in the
atmosphere!
Troposphere
•It contains almost all the water vapor in the
atmosphere, and water vapor produces
weather
Located just above troposphere
Stratosphere
•It is a layer of gas that absorbs the
ultraviolet rays coming from the
sun. It protects us from these rays,
which can cause skin cancer
Ozone layer
protects Earth’s surface from being hit by most meteoroids (chunks of stone and metal from space).
Mesosphere
a large rocky body in space, in orbit around the Sun
Asteroid
much smaller
rocks or
particles in orbit
around the Sun.
Meteoroid
If a meteoroid enters the Earth's atmosphere an d vaporizes, it becomes a
Meteor
If a small asteroid or large meteoroid survives its fiery passage through the Earth's atmosphere and lands on Earth's surface.
Meteorite
•The fourth and last layer
Thermosphere
