Environmental risks and benefits Flashcards
1
Q
Describe global warming
A
The greenhouse effect is when infrared radiation passes through the atmosphere, and some is absorbed and re-emitted in all directions by greenhouse gas molecules. The effect of this is to warm the Earth’s surface
and lower atmosphere. Global warming happens as a result of too much greenhouse gas
2
Q
Effects of global warming
A
- melting ice-sheets
- rising sea levels
- increase in storms
- change in the distribution of precipitation
- plants and wildlife might not have the time to adjust
3
Q
Define pollution
A
The contamination of the environment
4
Q
Give methods of exposure to pollutants
A
- breathing in chemical vapors and dust
- drinking or eating the chemical(ingestion)
- absorbing the chemical through the skin
5
Q
Describe soil erosion
A
- Significant impact on agricultural - implications for the urban environment.
- Reduce crop yields
6
Q
Describe the consequences of desertification ( environmental)
A
- Loss of soil nutrients
