India with WFP has worked for the last 50 years with focus for food aid provider

International whaling commission:

Set up under the international convention for regulation of whaling
It’s legally binding
HQ: Cambridge, England
Functions: regulating whaling and conservation of whale stocks
India is a member

Arctic council:
Estd 1989
It’s an intergovernmental organisation
HQ: location of secretariat rotated by annually with chairmanship of Arctic council
Members are: USA, Canada, Russia, Iceland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland
Main focus areas: environment and climate change, biodiversity, oceans and indigenous Arctic people
It’s funded by its member states
India is an observer state

UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction
Estd 1999
Dedicated secretariat to facilitate implementation of international strategy for disaster reduction
HQ: Geneva, Switzerland
Its mandate is to ensure synergies among disaster reduction activities

World nature organisation:
Estd 2010
WNO treaty came into force on 1st May 2014
Intergovernmental organisation
HQ in Geneva
Function: to conserve environment, environmental protection, green technology and sustainability
India is not a member

KIMO (local authorities international environmental organisation)
Estd 1990
Over 70 members
HQ: Denmark
Functions: committed to development of sustainable coastal community, protecting coastal communities from impacts of marine pollution and climate change
India is not a member

Earth day network:
Mission is to diversify, educate and activate environmental movement worldwide
HQ: USA
Earth day events followed in more than 193 countries
Earth day network has made significant inroads across India
Now has a permanent Indian program called EDN India located in Kolkata

Greenpeace:
Non profit NGO
Present in 40 countries
Indian operations run 4 broad campaigns: stop climate change, sustainable agriculture, preserving the oceans, preventing another nuclear catastrophe
They do not accept money from Government, intergovernmental organisations or political parties and corporations

A

Narmada bachao andolan:
Every people practice hard to save Narmada river
Movement mobilized itself against the development in 1980
Social movement consisting of adivasis, farmers, environmentalists and human Rights activists
This movement was against the sardar sarovar dam in Gujarat
Objective was to save and protect river Narmada
Famous persons involved: Medha Patkar and Baba amte

Ashoka trust for research in ecology and environment:

It researches institutions in areas of biodiversity conservation and sustainable development
Focuses on applied Science through research, education and action that influences policy

Vindhyan ecology and natural history foundation:
It is an NGO
Founded in 2012
HQ: Mirzapur, UP
To protect, conserve nature, natural resources and rights of nature-dependent communities in the ecologically fragile landscape of vindhya range in India
Main program: vindhya bachao abhiyan to bring ecological justice through research based knowledge

The energy and resource institute (TERI)
Non profit research institution
Estd: 1974
HQ: New Delhi
Objective: to work towards global sustainable development, creating innovative solution for environment conservation
Functions:
Green rating for integrated habitat assessment (GRIHA): conceived by TERI and develop by the ministry of new and renewable energy; it is the national rating system for green building in India
Terragreen is the monthly magazine of TERI
Lighting a billion lives (LaBL) is an initiative to provide clean lighting access to bottom of Pyramid communities

Bombay National history society:
An NGO
Founded on 1883
HQ: Mumbai
Objective: environment conservation and biodiversity research
Functions: publishes the journal of Bombay National history society. It is a partner of bird life international in India. Its quarterly magazine is Hornbill
