Environmental Monitoring Flashcards
What is Environmental Monitoring
Environmental Monitoring is the process of sampling and analyzing specific environmental media (such as soil, water, air or plants) for evidence of contaminant levels over time.
Why is environmental monitoring needed to observe?
EM is needed to observe the changes of the environment to study:
1. the dynamics of natural cycles
2. the dynamics of anthropogenic based impacts
Another reason why scientist may need EM?
To monitor the effects of pollution in the environment especially in the case of humans.
How can pollution be shown in the environment?
- Can be slow (chronic) and may require multiple observations over time, or
- They can be fast acting (acute), and be assessed with simultaneous observations
What laws are in place to help maintain a “green environment”?
The Environemntal Protection Act 1990
What are the agencies that enforces EM regulations?
- United States Environmental Protection Agency ( US EPA)
- National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA)
- Center Environmental Education and Communications of Ministry of Environmental Protection (CEEC)
Why is there a need for EM?
- For use of resources
- To overcome environment and ecology crisis
- For sustainable development
- For economic need and values
- To reduce disasters
- To decide the limiting line between environment and development
What acts does NEPA operates under?
- Executive Agencies Act;
- The Natural Resources Conservation Authority Act;
- The Town and Country Planning Act;
- The Land Development and Utilization Act;
- The Beach Control Act;
- The Watersheds Protection Act; and
- The Wild Life Protection Act
- Endangered Species (Protection, Conservation and Regulation of Trade)
Act
What is importance of EM?
Pollution is inevitable due to human population growth, industrial development, and energy use. Therefore, Environmental monitoring is critical to the protection of
human health and the environment.
