crime prevention through environmental design
what does CPTED do
prevents or removes opportunity for crime in a community or neighbourhood
what are the three parts of CPTED
natural, organised and mechanical
what is natural method

what is organised method
formal, human security
what is an example of organised method
police patrols, neighbourhood watch
what is mechanical method
security hardware put in place
what are examples of mechanical method
cctv, locks, lighting
what are strengths of surveillance
- catches offenders
- records activity
what are weaknesses of surveillance
- covert and no signs
- doesn’t stop most crime
- expensive
what are gated lanes

what do gated lanes prevent
littering, antisocial behaviour(deviance and crime)
what are criticisms of gated lanes
- expensive
- only prevents minor crime
- inconvenient to rest of public/local community
what are the two types of prison design
panopticon and supermax
what are panopticon prisons
circular shape prison with a watch tower in the middle where inmates are watched without being able to tell they are watched
why are panopticon prisons effective
- fear of punishment
- reduces antisocial behaviour
why are panopticon prisons ineffective
- expensive
- someone has to be in the tower and they have lack of resources
what are supermax prisons
isolated prisoners with minimum human interaction for the hardest criminals in USA
why are supermax prisons effective
safe for the public
why are supermax prisons ineffective
- cant watch people 24/7
- isolated can cause mental health issues as they can be inside up to 23 hours a day
