Environmental Impacts Flashcards
How is vegetation impacted?
Kills part/ entire plants.
Which exposes soil to heating from sun , which will dry it out. More water flow in rain event = unstable soil
Replanting decisions
How is soil impacted?
The heat changes the structure of soil.
Ignite organic matter which is needed for growth.
Nutrient loss.
How is water impacted?
Increased runoff of fain fall after a fire carries suspending soil particles dissolved inorganic nutrients Ito streams - reducing water quality.
(Ash)
(Eutrophication)
How is air impacted ?
Co2
Smoke
Temporary changes to weather
How is human health and welfare impacted ?
Destroy crops/ hay bales / timber which could account for the life savings of some landowners
How is wildlife impacted ?
Need food / water / cover and space to survive. Food water and cover is destroyed. Migration of animals away from fires. Habitats destroyed Impacts food webs
So what is done to try reduce impact of wildfires?
Prescribed burning.
As it’s under control , less env damage.
