environmental impacts Flashcards
1
Q
sealed batteries issues
A
can’t be fixed or replaced so the whole device is replaced
increases e waste and materials / energy used to create extra devices
2
Q
how are raw materials extracted
A
by particle shape based or magnetic separation
3
Q
how are people/ enviro affected by e waste
A
harmful as waste contains chemicals that can be toxic / contaminate water - uses non renewables so go into landfill and are wasted
4
Q
how is e waste improving
A
people upgrade devices less
trade in older devices to be recycled
5
Q
negative impacts on environment of computers
A
- materials are mined which causes waste / toxin release
- disposed into landfill - dont biodegrade
- large energy use / carbon footprint (increase pollution)
- emits greenhouse gases
- mineral extensive harming earths limited resources
6
Q
positive impacts of modern technology
A
- cleaner energy increases due to renewable resources
- due to genetic modification food production increases
- cities less polluted eg by catalytic converters in cars
- share knowledge to help on internet
- newer inventions use less energy eg LEDs
7
Q
why is it hard to sell lots of long lasting phones
A
- peer pressure to buy popular phone brands prohibits sales
- cost more money to give workers good pay / conditions + produce better quality products
8
Q
how companies design products with planned insolence
A
- have an older product current software become unavailable
- makes you not replace batteries so have to buy new phone
- don’t sell parts so can’t fix it / replace hardware
- software may run slower on old devices
