ENVIRONMENTAL AND MEDICAL ISSUES Flashcards

1
Q

Why is global warming a problem?

Q

What are the causes of global warming?

A
  • Increased usage of fossil fuels
  • Natural processes, warmest times before human discovery of fossil fuels
  • Solar activity, increased radiation
  • Nature, volcanic emissions, animals, bacteria

Q

What are the possible solutions to global warming?

A
  • Green energy, producing electricity without using carbon dioxide, e.g. solar power
  • Car manufacturers use alternative fuels such as hydrogen to reduce/prevent carbon emissions
  • Improve efficiency, reduce pollution in machines like cars
  • Increased public transplant to reduce carbon emissions

Q

What types of pollution are there?

A

Acid rain - burning fossil fuels increase acidity of rain destroying buildings
Human Waste - Waste attracts rats spreading diseases
Eutrophication - Excess fertilisers increases aquatic plants, causing fish to die
Radioactive pollution - Nuclear waste can cause cancer, millions of years to decompose

Q

What are the solutions to pollution:

A

Acid Rain - Use renewable sources in place of fossil fuels
Human Waste - Recycling and reusing waste
Eutrophication - Organic fertilisers, better sewage treatment
Radioactive pollution - 97% Waste reused, 3% successfully sealed away

Q

What motivates Christians to be Stewards?

A
  • In Genesis accounts of creation, God gave humans the right to rule over the earth. Giving humans control of animals and plants. Rest of bible makes clear that right to rule gives humans many responsibilities.

  • Sermon on the Mount, Jesus taught that Christians have a responsibility to ensure a fair sharing of the earth’s resources.
  • Bible also makes clear that there will be a judgement day at the end of the world when people will be judged on.
