What is Laudato Si and what did it talk about
Is a new encyclical from Pope Francis translated to care for our common home. Talks about how we are shaping the future of our planet and calls out to all people to acknowledge the urgency of our environmental challenges and to join him in embarking on a new path.
Stewardship
The earth and all life on it are part of God’s creation. We are called to respect this gift. We are responsible for taking care of the world we live in and for sharing and sustaining all the wonders and resources earth gives us
Preferential option for the poor
Caring for the poor is everyone’s responsibility. Preferential care should be shown the poor, whose needs and rights are given special attention in God’s eye
Quran
The Islamic sacred book that is the sacred word of Allah, dictated by prophet Muhammad by the Archangel Gabriel an written down in Arabic.
Hadith
The hadith are the words of the prophet Muhammad. It is his written teachings that he spoke and acted out.
Sunnah
Sunnah is scripture regarding prophets Muhammad’s actions and prayers. It is the book of the way of the prophet
Three general principles
The elements that compose the natural world are common property.
The right to benefit from natural resources is a right held in common by everyone
There shall be no damage or infliction of damage bearing in mind future users.
Four key principles
Tawhid, Khalifah, Amanah, accountability
Tawhid
Means Unification. Allah is unity and his unity is therefore reflected on mankind.
We are therefore entrusted with maintaining the unity/balance of his creation, the integrity of earth
Khalifah
Refers to how Allah has made us the stewards of his creation.
Amanah
Human beings should protect the environment that belong to Allah just as people would protect the belongings of a friend or family member whose good are entrusted to them.
Accountability
Islam teaches that on the day of judgement humanity will be questioned about every action, including how we treat the environment and its animals.
Rerum Novarum
encyclical talking about needs of workers and to protect the needs of the poorest countries to defects the needs of the world market
Common Good
The common good is reached when we work together to improve the well-being of people in our society and the wider world. The rights of the individual to personal possessions and community resources must be balanced with the needs of the disadvantaged and dispossessed.
Subsidiarity
All people have the right to participate in decisions that affect their lives. Subsidiarity requires that decisions are made by the people closest and most affected by the issues and concerns of the community
