Environment & Responsibility Flashcards
What are the 3 waves of environmental management?
- Conservationists
- Environmental Activism
- Sustainable Development
What did the first wave do? (Conservationists)
This group sought to protect and inventory places that were viewed as valuable, like parks & conservation areas). People were not actively involved. CONSERVE
What did the second wave do? (Activists)
This group identified that humans were causing environmental degradation, so new policies & protection agencies (ie, EPA) were created to aid endangered species and fight issues like pollution. RECOGNIZE
What did the third wave do? (Sustainable Developers)
This group wanted to repair/remediate long term problems, like climate change. They shifted responsibility to the current generation to fix it for future generations. REVERSE
Is a fourth wave needed? Name a possible example.
Just because we have responsibility does not mean we are doing anything about it. Ex, Te Awa Tupua Case: the river was given personhood to protect it from being depleted… possible next wave?
Primarily, environmental degradation by developing countries is due to:
Population growth
What are some solutions to population growth?
- 1 child law
- voluntary sterilization
- female empowerment (education, importance, etc)
- contraception
Primarily, environmental degradation by developed countries is due to:
Consumption
What are some solutions to consumption?
- environmental taxes
- education to reduce usage
What does PRS stand for?
Problem, Responsibility, Solution
What is the role of demand in consumption?
What you buy sends a message to companies… (ie, buying cheapest product tells corporations that you want cheaper products). Money gives you choice.
What can influence change?
It can be an individual, an event (ie, Chernobyl), a group (ie, WWF) or organization.
What is ecocentric value?
balanced natural order governs relationships between living things and humans often disrupt it with ignorance
What is technocentric value?
humankind is able to understand and control nature to suit it’s purposes. Believing all things exist to meet human wants/needs
