Q

How can Global Warming be solved?

A
  • We can reduce carbon emission by researching and using alternative forms of energy such as Solar or Wave power.
  • Increase use of public transport. Trains are the lowest carbon emission form of transport.
  • We can reduce our carbon emissions by reducing our electricity usage by switching off lights and turning off the TV rather than leaving it on standby.
  • Improve the efficiency of and reduce the pollution caused by cars e.g. Hybrid engines.

Q

Acid Rain is a form of pollution. What is Acid Rain?

A

Acid Rain is caused by burning off fossil fuels such as oil and coal. It changes the pH of the rainwater in the clouds so that it is acidic and burns things e.g. buildings, forests.

Q

Human Waste is a form of pollution. What is Human Waste?

A

Human Waste is produced by humans e.g. sewage, rubbish and litter. Sewage which is raw or not properly treated is a serious source of water pollution. Rubbish and litter can choke animals and cause bike and road accidents when left on the road. It is estimated that a fire breaks out every 12 minutes because of litter.

Q

Eutrophication is a form of pollution. What is Eutrophication?

A

Eutrophication is an excess of nitrates, nitrites and phosphates in the river. This leads to a lack of oxygen and an increase in aquatic plants causing fish to die and poisons to enter the water supply. It is caused by fertilizers being washed in to streams and sewage pollution could lead to major health problems such as Septicemia.

Q

Radioactive pollution is a form of pollution. What is Radioactive pollution?

A

Nuclear power stations produce nuclear waste which takes thousands of years to become safe. The waste is being buried and we don’t know if the container it is being buried in will be able to hold for this length of time. If humans come in to contact with too much radiation they can be killed, get cancer and have genetically mutated children.

Q

How can we solve the problem of Acid Rain?

A

If we stop using fossil fuels in power stations, acid rain will not be produced. So the solution is to create electricity from wind, sun, tides and nuclear energy.

Q

How can we solve the problem of human waste?

A

The problems of waste could be solved by a combination of recycling, using incinerators to produce electricity and sewage to produce methane or to provide fuel for power stations. Litter can be solved if people stop dropping litter.

Q

How can we solve the problem of Eutrophication?

A

Eutrophication is already being cut down through improved sewage treatments and less use of phosphates in detergents and less use of nitrates in farming.

Q

How can we solve the problem of Radioactive pollution?

A

Some nuclear waste can be reprocessed which means that 97% of the waste can be re-used. However, 3% of the waste needs to be stored deep underground

Q

What is a natural resource? How can we save the resources we have?

A

Natural resources are naturally occurring materials such as oil and fertile land which can be used by humans.

There are alternative ways to make electricity e.g. solar power (using the sun’s heat).
Recycling will enable a lifetime of resources to be extended. For example, some cars are now made from 75% recycled material.
Scientists are working on using chemicals from plants rather than oil to produce things such as plastic.
Car manufacturers are looking at water and electric batteries as ways of powering cars;instead of oil and petrol.

Q

Christian feelings towards Stewardship?

A

-In the Genesis accounts of creation, God gave humans the right to rule over the Earth. It gives humans control of animals, all other living creatures and plants,
