Environment Flashcards
Kyoto Protocol
1997
1st significant binding agreement which requires industrialized countries to commit to reducing their GHG emissions by an average 5%
China overturned the US as the biggest GHG emiter
2005
In the US, number of vehicles
220 millions
US global consumption of energy
22.5%
US renewable energy
7% of the US consumption
If everybody lives like an American, we would need ? earths
4 earths
Shale oil and Canada :
- global reserves
- production
- consequences ?
- 70% of the global reserves
- 60% of the global production
- consequences :
> positive = creation of 600 000 jobs + energetic independence
> negative = water contamination, pollution… CONTROVERSIAL
Regulations in the US ?
- Environmental Protection Agency
> the GHB emissions are a threat to the public health and the welfare of current and future generations - The Clean Air Act
- The American Clean Energy and Security Act (2009)
The New Energetic Policy of Obama
- reduce waste
- increase the renewable sources of energy in the energy mix from 10% in 2012 to 25% in 2015 > allowance of 150 billion to support green energies
- encourage innovation (ex : program Future Generation to produce energy with coal without co2 emissions)
Americans in favor of the fight against global warming
2/3 // increasing number of natural disasters
Americans who will vote for a candidate who will make the global warming one ot his of her priorities

Limits
- Florida : forbidden using the words “global warming” in the environment ministry (whereas it is one of the most vulnerable states about the raise of sea level)
- in January 2015, a bill to affirm the human responsabilities about global warming was rejected by the Congress
The president chooses the nation’s most vulnerable state to talk about impacts of climate change and rising sea levels during his Earth Day speech
The Everglades lacked the dramatic imagery of shrinking glaciers in Alaska or the drought-stricken peaks of California. But Florida’s great swamp provided an urgency that other settings couldn’t : it already is in trouble from rising seas.
3rd most populous state = one of the most vulnerable places on Earth to climate change (combination of low, flat landscape and population density)
