Environment Flashcards
Source Function
The Earths …… Function is the natural resources from the Biophysical environment.
Ex: water, timber, fish, soil, minerals and fossil fuels. They are classified as either renewable or non renewable. Earths natural systems are responsible for these natural resources.
What does Sustainability mean?
Development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
What is the Earths Sink Function?
The safe suck up of wastes and pollution, which are caused through human activities and life. It is also the way the environment handles the things people put into it. Us humans depend on the environment to get rid of our waste and recycle it safely so that it can be reused.
What is the Earths service function?
Refers to the provision of the environment or ecosystem service that support life, without needing humans to take action.
Ex: The greenhouse effect. This is because it operates to make sure the atmosphere holds the heat produced by radiation.
What are The Earths Spiritual Functions?
Is all about cultures and beliefs within our environment by the people.
Ex: Aboriginals and their beliefs of the dreamtime.
If you have looked at a rainbow and had a special link, then you have experienced spiritual function of the earth.
What is space?
- Studying the effects of a location.
- These spaces are managed and looked after by humans.
- Latitude and location.
- Where a place is in terms of distance and direction.
- Features of space and how they are distributed.
- Also how they interconnect with other characteristics.
What does it mean by Place?
- How places influence our lives.
- Some are natural places, whereas others are highly modified.
- Provide us with facilities and services we need.
- There are physical and human characteristics of places.
- Environmental quality and their location can affect the quality of life of the people.
What is Interconnection?
- People and things are connected through places.
- Helps us to understand why places are changing.
- How people connect to one place can lead another to change.
- Population characteristics are influenced by economic development.
- Economies and populations of places are interconnected.
What is change in our environment?
- Understanding of geological problems, places and different environments.
- Changes could occur in short of long periods of time.
- Example of a short term change could be sand erosion on a beach.
- Example of a long term change would be changes in the populations rates.
Definition of environment
- Relationship between humans and different ………
- People depend on it for the different functions it provides.
- Humans cause positive and negative effects.
- Example: Forming dams when there is floods is preserving the urban environment.
- However the ……… can be mistreated when global warming occurs.
What’s scale?
- Useful tool which looks at situations from a different perspective.
- From the local, national, global and regional perspective.
- Used to find explanations and compare outcomes.
- Geographical questions at spatial levels.
What is Eutrophication?
- Increase in the rate of supply of nitrogen and organic matter in an ecosystem.
- Human made enrichment of an aquatic system.
- This is done by adding nutrients.
- Cause of deterioration of water quality.
- Ex: English Channel is effected by human activity.
What is flooding?
- Is to cover or submerge a place or area with water.
- Has effects such as landslides, crops can be distorted and people’s environments can be ruined.
- Humans are the main cause (through farming and cutting down trees).
- Pollution and rivers can also be a cause too.
What is climate change?
- Change in the global and regional climate.
- Long term change.
- Atmospheric temperature.
- Burning fossil fuels.
- Human pollution
- Atmosphere traps heat rays from the sun.
- Causes increase to global temperature.
- This changes the planets climate.
What is deforestation?
…….. is the permanent destruction to the Earths forests. This destruction can could cause the extinction of forests in the future, as it is only 30% of the worlds land mass.
