environment Flashcards
global warming signs that are impacting australia
droughts and water scarcity - water shortage, environmental damage
biodiversity loss - habitat lost, invasive species, climate change related impacts
how can environmental changes can be tracked over time
satellites - satellites can take pictures of the Earth from space and overtime, scientist can study those changes over a course of a year for changes of forest, ice and water
what are some human activities that contribute to the increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere
burning of fossil fuels - fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas for energy production and transportation can release large amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere
deforestation - cutting forests can remove the natural CO2 absorbing capacity
what is heat island effect
heat island effect is when man-made structures such as buildings, roads and materials that involve concrete and asphalt. Soak up heat during the day and releases at night, keeping the city warm even after sunset.
what can we do to help heat island effect
implementing green spaces such as parks and planting trees which can help the cooling through shading as well as encourage use of public transportation, walking and cycling instead of use your own personal cars to reduce heat absorbing pavement
what is cultural burns
controlled fires set by the indigenous community to manage the land.
eg. maintaining habitats for animals hunted or gathered
what is controlled burns
fires that are purposely set and managed usually by government or land managers
eg. fires to remove extra plants and brush
difference between cultural and controlled burns
cultural:
- Done by Indigenous communities
- Part of traditional land stewardship practices
- Based on Indigenous ecological knowledge
controlled:
- Done by government agencies and land managers
- Focused on reducing wildfire risk
- Use modern land management techniques
is climate change a human made issue? why or why not?
Climate change is largely a human-made issue. The burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, and human activities that release greenhouse gases are the primary drivers of the rapid and extreme climate changes we’re seeing, not natural fluctuations. In short, human influence on the environment is the main cause of climate change
