Enviromental cycle Flashcards
The water cycle
continuous movement of water in different states between the earth and the atmosphere
Transpiration
(of a plant or leaf) the exhalation of water vapour through the stomata
Condensation
the conversion of a vapour or gas to a liquid
Precipitation
rain, snow, sleet, or hail that falls to or condenses on the ground
Surface run-off
Refers to the movement of water over the land surface
Percolation
(of a liquid or gas) filter gradually through a porous surface or substance
infiltration
Precipitation that falls onto land can soak into soil, refilling groundwater sources
Groundwater flow
water that infiltrates into the soil becomes groundwater, which slowly moves through underground aquifers
Aquifer
a rock layer that contains water and releases it in appreciable amounts
Evaporation
the process of turning from liquid into vapour
Freezing
Below 0 temperature
Melting
becoming liquefied by heat
