Enviromental Change & Management Flashcards
Name an invasive species and where it is located in Australia
Cane toad- located in Australia QLD
Why was the cane toad introduced to Australia?
It was introduced to Australia in an attempt to control the native-to-Australia cane beetle that was killing the sugar cane crops.
Where was the cane toad originally from?
It arrived in 1935 from South America via Hawaii
What happened when the cane toad was introduced into Australia?
The came toads were a complete failure at killing the cane beetles. Instead of controlling the pests, the toads became a pest themselves. They are breeding rapidly and carry buffo toxin that kills Australia’s native animals
Name 5 environmental issues
Increased sea levels Air pollution Deforestation Urban sprawl Climate change
Identification of increased sea levels
Causes changes to shorelines and disturbs delicate environments such as beaches, barrier islands and wetlands through increased erosion and deluge.
Management strategies of increased sea levels
Houses are constructed on stilts.
Transport by boat
Professionally designed sea walk structures
Identification of air pollution
Where burning of fossil fuels or driving a substance is released into the environment that has harmful or poisonous effects.
Management strategies for air pollution
Car pulling
Conserve energy
Identification of deforestation
Chopping down trees which causes animals habitats to be ruined causing them to lose there source of food and water also
Management strategies of deforestation
Plant trees in other places
Identification of urban sprawl
The spreading of urban developments on undeveloped land near a city
Management strategies for urban sprawl
Preserve land
Stop building
Start restoring
Identification of climate change
Causes ice caps to melt, droughts, wildfires and hurricanes
Management strategies of climate change
Build sustainability
