Enviromental Change and Managment Flashcards
Global Warming
A gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth’s atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide.
Sustainability
The quality of not being harmful to the environment or depleting natural resources, and thereby supporting long-term ecological balance.
Ecological Service
Ecological goods and services are the benefits arising from the ecological functions of healthy ecosystems. Such benefits accrue to all living organisms.
Stewardship
The caring and ethical approach to sustainable management of habitats for the benefit of all the life on earth.
Ecological Footprint
A measure of human demand on the Earth’s natural systems in general and ecosystems in particular.
Bio Capacity
A capacity of a Biome or an Ecosystem to generate a renewable and ongoing supply of resources and to process or absorb its waste.
Source Function
Natural Resources which have originated directly from the biophysical Environment.
Sink Function
The safe absorption of the wastes and pollution produced by human activities and life.
Service Function
The Earth’s provision of Environmental or Ecosystems services that support life without requiring human action.
Spiritual Function
Intrinsic Recreational, Psychological and Aesthetic and Spiritual Value of Environments.
Climate Change
Any change in Climate overtime, wether due to Natural Process or Human activities.
Enhanced Greenhouse Effect
The observable of rising world atmospheric temperature over the past century particularly, during the last couple of decades.
Place
A particular position, point, or area in space; a location.
Lithosphere
Land layer of the Earth, contains Metamorphic, Igneous and Sedimentary Rocks.
Hydrosphere
Oceans, Lakes and River of the Earth.
Atmosphere
The Sky and all the Gases it contains.
Biosphere
The Living layer of Earth, it contains, Plants, Animals and Humans
Space
An open area the continuous expanding Universe.
Interconnection
A state of being connected reciprocally.
Change
Make or become different.
Environment
The surroundings or conditions in which a person, animal, or plant lives or operates.
Scale
A geographical scale is the ratio of a distance on the map to the conforming distance on the ground. The scales in maps are expressed as a ratio, a fraction or as a lexical scale.
Deforestation
Removing of Forest and Large areas of trees.
Photosynthesis
A process which occurs in plants, the creation of oxygen.
Herbivores
Animals which only eat Plants
Carnivores
Animals which only eat meat.
Ozone Layer
An Layer in the Earth’s Stratosphere that protect the Earth from UV Rays which come from the sun.
Green House Gases
Mainly caused by Cars and Planes as they let of the most fuels in the Earth’s Atmosphere, this is causing Climate Change
