Entropy Flashcards
What is entropy
Degree of disorder of a system, becomes more stable when it’s energy spread out in a more disordered state
What is a spontaneous reaction
Reaction that occurs in a given set of conditions without intervention, accompanied by an increase in overall entropy
Which state has greatest entropy
Gases
Why does entropy increase as temp increases
Because the particles gain energy and move faster and further apart
Is there an increase in entropy when a substance melts or evaporated
Yes entropy increases
When is there an increase in disorder
-when substance melts/evaporates
-when there are more moles of products than reactants
Why is there an increase In entropy when lattice dissolved in solution
Because the ions that make up the lattice are dissociated and can move on the solution as opposed to being held in their position by strong bonds
How to calculate entropy change for reaction and it’s units
Entropy change total = entropy change of system + entropy change of surroundings
JK-1mol-1
How to calculate entropy change of surroundings
-delta H/T(kelvin)
How to calculate entropy change of system from standard entropies of products and reactants
Entropy change of system = sum of standard entropies of products - sum of entropies of reactants
When do substances have zero entropy
At 0K
When is reaction more likely to occur
When high entropy and very exo enthalpy change
When is reaction least likely to occur
When low entropy and very endo enthalpy
