Entomology Flashcards
What are the four characteristics of arthropods?
Invertebrates, have an exoskeleton, have jointed appendages, have 6 or more legs
Describe the three types of forensic entomologists
Urban: involves insects and other animals that affect manmade structures
Stored product: involves insects being stored in food packages
Mediocriminal: involves PMI, location of death, and criminal misuse of insects
Post mortem interval (PMI)
Time since death
Time since colonization
Time since the bugs started to colonize the dead body
Invertebrate
Lacks a vertebral column
Larvae (maggot)
the immature, wingless, worm-like feeding form that hatches from the eggs of many insects
Pupa
A stage between the larvae and adult during which the organism undergoes major developmental changes
Molt
To shed an outer layer periodically
Instar
A stage is the life of an arthropod (or any insect) between two successive molts
Oviposit
To lay eggs
Carrion
Dead and putrefying flesh, unit for food
Ambient temperature
Surrounding temperature of dead body (helps determine development of insects)
How many instars does the blow fly have?
3
What is the first species to arrive at a dead body?
Blow fly
What is the second species to arrive at a dead body?
Carrion beetles
